Placing a caramel in the center of each apple half before baking is a stroke of genius. The candy melts into a delectable pool that oozes over the apple when you cut into it. A brown sugar and cinnamon topping adds flavor and even more oozy goodness.

4 LARGE, CRISP APPLES

4 CARAMELS

3 TABLESPOONS UNSALTED BUTTER, MELTED

¼ CUP (PACKED) BROWN SUGAR

1½ TABLESPOONS ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR

1½ TEASPOONS CINNAMON

1 Cut the apples in half and scoop out the core from each half using a small metal spoon. Cut 2 concentric circles into the apple halves around the scooped-out centers. Turn the apples over and make several slits without cutting through the center of the apple.

2 Arrange the apple halves in the Dutch oven, cut side up. Place a caramel into the center of each apple half.

3 In a small bowl, stir together the butter, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Spoon this mixture over the apple halves in the Dutch oven, dividing evenly. Place the lid on the Dutch oven.

4 Place the Dutch oven over a bed of 6 hot coals and place 20 hot coals on the lid. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the apples are tender. Serve warm.
